In the junior event the riders were only allowed one run to qualify for the second day which made it hard for everyone considering the conditions, rain snow sleet and fog. Andrew Roth was out early due to a knee injured sustained in training on the Thredbo park the day before and couldn't compete. But not to be dissapointed, he assisted in coaching the rookie comp team kids taking them through the course in training and helping them select which line to take. He must of did a great job as Ben Alexander, Jay Ghattas, Daniel Klein and William Hargreaves all qualifed along with Cameron and Lauren Staveley. Thanks Rothy. It must also be mentioned that Jack Carlin was the only junior to spin over the gap of rocks putting it all on the line in qualifying to land smoothly, if it wasn't for a fall further down the course he would of been in the top placing on the day. The final standings after the first day had Ben Alexander qualified in 2nd, Jack Carlin in 4th with the Staveleys, Will Hargreaves DK and Jay also all qualifed rounding out the top 10. Not bad for Ben considering his first competition. Final day came round and every was pumped, the weather was a little bit better but riders only had one run again to proove they had the goods. Ben was up first, but unfortuantly for him he fell badly on his shoulder on the second feature which would hurt him and put him out of not only this competition but the Australian Junior Series which sucked. Next time Benny :( we all know you have potential! Next up was Jack who was riding with confidence early in training but some how just sat down on his 360 which would also put him out of the running for the podium.
But little old Will Hargreaves was also up there and in true Hargreaves underdog form just like Baw Baw he rode smooth and consistently. Lots can be learn't by Will's run to know what your limits are and to ride clean smooth and agressively this will always get you on the podium which it did for Will coming in 3rd on the day. Lauren Staveley again stuck to what she knows best and rode smoothly with out falling with big grabs, which is what the judges are looking for in a freeride event. Lauren ended up in 1st beating out a strong field of junior NSW riders. DK and Cameron Staveley also rode super clean landing everything, next year we will have both of them dropping the big boys line and no doubt they will be up there in the mix, not bad for 11 and 12 year olds making finals and beating out boys much there senior. Jay Ghattas also rode smoothly in his first competition final at TSC and rounded out the minor placings. Full results from both days can be viewed here: |
